British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei

British Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (BCCTaipei) is a value-adding resource that champions the business and social interests of its members in Taiwan. Made up of large and small corporations, individuals, and overseas associations, BCCTaipei is a strong and cosmopolitan mixture of successful enterprises in diverse industries.
BCCTaipei acts as a key resource for UK companies interested in the Taiwan market by ensuring that businesses, especially SMEs, have a direct line to assistance and networks. They provide landing pad services and offer a united but unbiased commercial perspective on all issues affecting British business interests in Taiwan, and Taiwan business interests in the UK.
BCCTaipei provides a broad range of membership activities and events including business networking opportunities and free-for-member Talent Development Workshops. BCCTaipei also has a number of Signature Events including the St Andrew's Ball, Charity Golf and Football Tournaments, and the Christmas Charity Auction. We also have a number of specific events, large and small, throughout the year focusing on CSR, Young Professional Development and Women in Business.
The Chamber is housed inside the British Office and shares a very close relationship to the Foreign Office, Department for Business & Trade and the British Council, and holds periodic joint events with other foreign chambers.
In conjunction with membership activities, BCCTaipei has donated over 18 million NT dollars to local Taiwanese charities, and has an active programme to support the CSR initiatives of its members in Taiwan.

Diplomacy in the Modern Workplace: Navigating Office Politics

We all know that women are significantly outnumbered at the leadership level in organisations. Yet, rather than getting better, Covid only worsened the leadership gap – with positive pre-covid trends towards representation going into reverse and women reporting much higher levels of burnout and job loss.

Although there are a myriad of reasons why there exists a gender gap in leadership, one emerging area of research points to differences concerning women's responses to "office politics." Women are often averse to 'being political', believing it to be inauthentic, antithetical to meritocracy and hoping that their work will speak for itself. However, in a busy and fast-paced environment, the importance of creating connection to your work, expanding your network, and clearly communicating your value are of crucial importance – something that Jessica has learnt the hard way!

A diplomat with a private sector background, Jessica will talk through how many of the skills that are taught in diplomacy can be applied to any workplace. She'll also explain how to shift your mindset, understanding that articulating your impact isn't showing off; that arguing your point is because you're paid to have an opinion; and that acting tactically and building alliances to achieve a desired outcome is a very practical response to many situations.

This one-hour workshop will connect diplomatic theory with the practical behaviours that you can demonstrate in your workplace to achieve better outcomes for yourself and your team. It will be followed with a networking session, which will be a chance to create meaningful connections, be inspired and swap tips on how to navigate a modern global workplace.

After the event, we invite you to stay and enjoy light refreshments and alcoholic beverages at Edrington Taiwan's office bar. This is a great opportunity to unwind on a Friday afternoon, network, and connect with fellow participants from various industries. Don't miss this chance to mingle and make new connections in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere! Networking will take place at Edrington Taiwan's office bar which is located down a few floors of the same building.

The Women in Business Committee is dedicated to fostering diversity and promoting success strategies for women in the business arena. Through regular events, the network provides a platform for women and advocates of diversity to engage in discussions on business challenges, career progression, and network expansion. Since its inception in 2010, the BCCTaipei Women in Business Network has been instrumental in forming new friendships, sharing valuable experiences, and enhancing professional contacts and career development.

Objectives of the Women in Business Network:

  • Enhance the representation and influence of women in business.
  • Empower women across Taiwan to thrive in their professional environments.
  • Provide insights on achieving a healthy work-life balance.
  • Facilitate discussions on pertinent issues, fostering opportunities for future collaboration and professional growth.
