UK Pavilion Mini- Seminar 2 | Geotechnical Risk Management of Offshore Windfarm Projects
UK Pavilion Mini- Seminar 2 | Geotechnical Risk Management of Offshore Windfarm Projects
Geotechnics play a vital role at all stages of offshore windfarm development; conceptual design to detailed design and installation. This talk presents the key stages in an offshore windfarm project where geotechnical input is critical and provides insight into how lack of correct geotechnical input can lead to ground risks later in a project. If ground risks are allowed to pass on in project stages, its impact and consequences on project cost and programme can be very high at later stages. Thus...
Thus, ground risks should be identified as soon as possible and mitigated early on through site investigation, ground modelling and design. The talk provides insight into soil classification and its impact in design, geohazards, integrated ground models, pile designs and seabed intervention methods for cable burial and installation. Most common pitfalls that are directly or indirectly link to geotechnics that lead to project cost and program delay are discussed and recommendations provided. Unmanaged ground risks can have escalated impact on project cost and programme. Geotechnical risk management is paramount for successful offshore wind projects.

The floating platform, WTG size and mooring design play key roles along with metocean conditions. Which Metocean parameters and local weather phenomenon like typhoons will play a primary role in influencing the installation strategy? The talk will give an insight into some of the Taiwan specific considerations for developing a robust and insurable transport and installation strategy. The foundation for the presentation is based on the combination of the understanding developed during the installation of Kincardine Floating Offshore Wind Farm and Flotation Energy’s inhouse operational simulation tools.
FOW is becoming a fast-maturing technology with the potential of cementing Taiwan’s leadership in offshore wind in APAC. Globally, the industry has made a significant step forward with many demonstration and pre-commercial deployments in the past 5 years. All of which have large, deep territorial waters, significant wind resources offshore, high population and industrial activity near the coastline. These conditions make Taiwan very suitable for the development of FOW. Early this year, the Ener...
Early this year, the Energy Administration took the right first step to formulate the deployment plan of pre-commercial projects, 6-12 units each, up to 3 selected projects; and policy goals to effectively support the deployment.
In his short presentation, prof. KT Ma highlights three importances that make floating offshore wind deployment a sucessfull mission.

The development of renewable energy often encounters biodiversity issues. If managed properly, a project can enhance biodiversity, resulting in a net gain rather than posing risks to it. This presentation will reference recent renewable energy development projects to discuss the associated biodiversity risks and opportunities.
